Sabrina V. Humphrey
I use my work to overcome a lot of a personal negativity. I’ve always been influenced by the personal trauma brought up in my life, and for me, I have learned to accept issues from my past. I’ve suffered from a lot of problems from bullying, sexual assault, molestation, and child abuse. A lot of the times I would express my art based on emotions of vengeance, hate, anger, fear, and death. Normally, most people try not to think about these emotions even though they are natural. To me, hate is just as natural as love, anger is just as natural to happiness, sadness is related to fear, and life is just as normal as death. I learned to accept that due to my symptoms of PTSD, that it is sometimes very upsetting that today’s society pays little attention to victims of trauma and mental illness. I enjoy the idea of life and death, it’s a part of life that makes people human. Most of my pieces with illustrative characters represent certain aspects of my personality and life. As for the abstract and contemporary pieces, they represent the aggression, negative thoughts and energy that I had experienced in the past. I’ve always been influenced by the personal trauma brought up in my life. I have learned to accept the issues from my past. A lot of the times I would express my art based on my thoughts of vengeance, hate, anger, fear, and death. Normally, most people try not to think about these thoughts even though they are natural emotions. I find it very upsetting that today’s society pays little attention to victims of trauma and mental illness. I believe that my work can inspire other people to be aware of the negativity and evil that happens in this world, the same way they are aware of the good. Most people only want to focus on the good until something tragic occurs. This leads to difficulties coping with personal trauma. My work shows that death, trauma, and chaos is inevitable. And we should not be ashamed to express our raw emotions and thoughts. Everyone goes through some type of pain in their lives. The darkness within the mind is what makes one human.
